Climbing in Sagres
Climbing in Sagres is absolutely an experience of a lifetime! Located a 30 minute drive away from Lagos, it’s definitely the most dramatic climbing area of the Algarve, with most of its climbs just over the sea.
Many of these have to be abseiled down into and then climbed back up. It’s not unusual to be belaying from a small outcrop while waves crash below us against the rocks. Very atmospheric!
That said, there are around 100+ bolted routes that range from easy to very hard spread out along the coastline.
These comprise 8 different climbing areas near Sagres, each with several sectors spread out over 30 km of coastline. We can access some on foot, other by abseiling/rappelling down, or even by scrambling down on a via ferrata.
Climbing in Sagres it’s definitely not a location for absolute beginners, due to the exposure, style of access and mental challenges implied.
For that reason, we keep our sessions private or tiny, especially when climbing in Sagres. There are, however, grades for all levels, and we can organize both half and full days depending on which sectors to climb at.
We usually start climbing either in the morning or afternoon, but as noted before, that will depend on the climber’s skill level and the most suited location.
We can tailor all sessions to every person. In addition, we can provide also mental and technical training for this specific environment.
*If you wish to get a compact topo guide book and support the regional climbing association, we recommend getting the AMEA’s one, as they use the funds for bolting and re-bolting projects.
**Check our Rope Access course if you wish to become autonomous and gain proficiency in skills like rappeling, building anchors and belaying a climber from above.
