Climbing in Rocha da Pena

Rocha da Pena is a rock climbing site suited for all levels. This fabulous limestone tabletop mountain is in the Protected Natural area of Rocha da Pena, near the small town of Salir.

It’s by far the most established climbing site in the Algarve and boasts around 100+ routes. These have lengths between 8 and 35 meters, and its friction is superb! Besides, all sectors start around 400 meters above sea level and are facing south. This results in amazing views over the countryside and distant ocean, as a great feeling of exposure.

Although it’s mostly a single pitch sport climbing site, there is also one traditional climbing sector.

What’s more, climbing in Rocha da Pena is possible all year round.

While it’s perfect for both morning and afternoon sessions during fall, winter and spring, summer is more unforgiving. The high temperatures and sun exposure makes it better to climb from 14h30 onwards, since the crag will be in the shade during the afternoon.

The approach comprises a small hike from the parking lot that can take between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on which of the 15 sectors to climb at.

We prefer to run private sessions or take up to 4 climbers per instructor. This ensures loads of climbing for everyone and allows us to tweak every outing to meet your individual needs.

We believe that climbing is more than a sport, but also a great philosophy for life. In fact, it’s a great tool for facing fears, dealing with adversity and stimulating curiosity. We are more than happy to help with the mental side of it too.

*If you wish to get a compact topo guide book and support the regional climbing association, we recommend getting the AMEA’s one, as they use the funds for bolting and re-bolting projects.

**Check our courses if you wish to further develop your skills.
